A highly personal documentary from Holywood director John T. Davis. The Uncle Jack is a vivid portrait of Davis’s uncle John McBride Neill – the celebrated architect who designed Northern Ireland’s most glamorous cinemas during the 1930s and 40s – and a self-portrait of Davis himself. It also serves as an elegy to NI’s lost ‘picturehouses’, not least Bangor’s Tonic Cinema, regarded as McBride Neill’s architectural masterpiece.
The event is supported by a unique heritage project Strand Stories: Preserving NI’s Picturehouse Past (managed by Strand Arts Centre in Belfast – NI’s oldest surviving picturehouse – and funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund).
